Bio:THis journal is to track my research on exercise related hypothalamic amenorrhea. I have been trying to recover from this since January 2002.

At 5'3", I exercised and starved my way down to 102 pounds, perhaps because I thought I was being healthy. I was also taking fat burners because I was terrified of fat. I was also taking birth control pills.
-My periods stopped while still on the pill. I was about 14% bodyfat and had an opressive workout schedule.
-September 2002, a friend-of-a-friend on livejournal saw a picture of me, and helped me to see that I was killing myself with exercise and starvation. At 12% bodyfat, I was losing my hair, I was obsessive, my moods were terrible and would snap at those who I hadn't isolated myself from.
-I began to ease up on my exercise routine and come to terms with having to gain weight and lose the perceived "control" I had.
-I stopped the pill in October 2002 and discovered my body stopped producing hormones naturally, and that I was at pre-pubescent hormonal activity.
-currently around 125 pounds and holding. As of yet, there are still no hormones or menstruation.

I'm interested in wsing natural methods of recovery because Western medicine's answer is to give you a pill to make it 'look like' everything is normal. Their usual answer is to prescribe birth control until you want to have kids, then run you through reproductive drugs.

I am working with doctors at the University of Toronto in their "Active Women Study" to determine the cause, effect and recovery protocal. My western doctors: endocrinologist, GP, sports medicine doctor, fertility specialist, and eating disorder specialist have been less than helpful. I have been to naturopaths, acupuncturists and reiki practitioners.

I am determined to recover from this naturally.

Update 2004: IT WORKED! I became pregnant in February 2003 and gave birth to a very healthy girl in November.

Update 2005: My period returned while still breastfeeding! That's some pretty stellar hormone function, I'd say!
